The Order of Mercy was given to fifty exceptional volunteers each year, nominated by the Prince of Wales and approved by the sovereign. The 1948 National Health Act which took over these hospitals effectively made the League redundant, but in 1999 it re-formed to provide support to other voluntary health initiatives.\n\nThis medal was awarded to Helen Carte (1852-1913), the wife of Richard D'Oyly Carte (1844-1901). D'Oyly Carte was a theatre impresario responsible for the financial support of the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, including the formation of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company and the founding of the Savoy Theatre.","physicalDescription":"Red enamel and gilt cross with hinged suspension in the shape of the three feather symbol of the Prince of Wales.
