Tom Ford served as the head designer for Gucci from 1990 to 2004 and was instrumental in bringing a commercial sexiness to Gucci fashions for men and women. \r\n\r\nIn this collection Ford wowed fans with fox-pelt collars adorning understated robe coats, cocktail dresses with delicate beading, and evening gowns with flared and feathered hemlines. The palette was typical Gucci: graphic black and white in the main with shocks of vibrant colour. In this collection, according to fashion journalist Cathy Horyn, Ford ignored daytime clothes. ('Tom Ford Goes Out With a Roar,' <i>New York Times</i>, 26 February, 2004). Horyn wrote that 'the night-time world is what Mr Ford understands best...so implicit in necklines plunging to the navel.' This dress, which has just such a deep plunging v-shaped neckline, appeared in the catwalk presentation’s finale grouping with  several other white silk jersey gowns with sexy side slits and enticing jewelled clasps, reminiscent of the gowns that had catapulted Ford to fashion fame in the early 1990s. The gold leather shoes which accompanied this dress add a glamorous finishing touch.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ford, Tom","id":"A19701"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Gucci","id":"C7065"},"association":{"text":"designers","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Formal wear","id":"THES48950"},{"text":"Evening wear","id":"THES48999"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2013GL2571","2013GL2576","2013GL2593"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES326038"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES326038"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES308069"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}],[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}],[{"text":"Dress","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2004","earliest":"2004-01-01","latest":"2004-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the maker","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This dress and accompanying pair of shoes belong to Tom Ford's Autumn/Winter 2004/5 collection, his final women's wear for Gucci.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Ensemble, white silk jersey evening dress with a cutaway waist and decorative brooch with gold leather shoes, Tom Ford for Gucci, Autumn/Winter 2004/5, Italy.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Label for the exhibition: \"The Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945-2014\"\r\n\r\nPEEK-A-BOO EVENING DRESS\r\nGucci, Autumn/Winter 2004/5\r\nSilk jersey\r\nThis form-fitting, peek-a-boo evening dress exemplifies the overt sexiness of Tom Ford’s designs for Gucci. The designer’s canny advertising commissions from influential photographers such as Mario Testino helped Ford create a new model of femininity. Ford channelled these efforts into turning around Gucci’s fortunes, which in turn propelled him to international prominence.\r\nGIVEN BY GUCCI\r\nT.6:1-2005","date":{"text":"05/04/2014-27/07/2014","earliest":"2014-04-05","latest":"2014-07-27"}}],"partNumbers":["T.6:3-2005","T.6:2-2005","T.6:1-2005"],"accessionNumberNum":"6","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2005,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Shoe [1]","Shoe [2]","Dress"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-15","recordCreationDate":"2007-07-12","availableToBook":true}}
