Designed in the form of the White Rose of York, it was inspired by the celebrations held over a weekend in York in July 2012 to mark 800 years since the city received its charter from King John. The celebrations included a York 800 flotilla, a Festival of the Rivers and Ebor Vox, a giant community choir performing by the River Ouse.\n\nBerwick Kaler never wore make-up for his Dames, who he always wanted to be patently a man in a frock. To this end he also wore the brown workman's boots that can be seen in this design. Their laces were their only flamboyant note - one yellow and one red - worn to contrast with the socks, with one red leg and one yellow.","physicalDescription":"Costume design by Charles Cusick Smith for Berwick Kaler as Hattie Hood in <i>Robin Hood and his Merry Mam</i>. Full length figure of a Pantomime Dame, wearing a White Rose of York costume inspired by York's 800-year celebrations. The costume consists of a huge heraldic white rose on a dress with sleeves resembling petals. The lower edge of a knee-length orange skirt, trimmed with a row of green points, is visible behind the rose. At the centre of the rose is the number 800, the digits in pink, red and orange. The Dame has a similar rose headdress and heavy boots, worn with one yellow sock and one red sock. With six attached fabric swatches, lower right.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Charles Cusick Smith","id":"AUTH338936"},"association":{"text":"costume designers","id":"AAT163428"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"card","id":"x30344"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT183946"},{"text":"pen","id":"x45475"},{"text":"tulle","id":"AAT256611"},{"text":"sequins","id":"x30374"},{"text":"synthetic fabric","id":"x33026"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"},{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour and pen on card with attached fabric swatches","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Costumes","id":"THES269529"},{"text":"Pantomime","id":"THES266218"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2017KN4201"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES356706"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"costume design","id":"AAT163423"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"York","id":"x30072"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2012","earliest":"2012-01-01","latest":"2012-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"S.702:1-2019","id":"O1513775"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"S.702:2-2019","id":"O1513775"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"Given by the artist","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"42","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Costume design by Charles Cusick Smith for Berwick Kaler as Hattie Hood, in a White Rose of York costume inspired by York's 800-year celebrations, in<i> Robin Hood and his Merry Mam</i> at the York Theatre Royal (13 December 2012 - 2 February 2013)","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.996-2017"],"accessionNumberNum":"996","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2017,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2016-10-24","availableToBook":true}}
