Originally a team of ten, the team almost tripled in size to 29 by the 2020 Olympic Games, where the flag’s message of unity was again shared physically and online. \r\n\r\nRefugee Nation is a not-for-profit creative project organised by a collective of creatives and Yara Said (b. 1991) is an artist and designer based in the Netherlands. She graduated from Damascus University in 2014, and her practice explores an aesthetic relationship to fragility and impermanence. She designed the flag as a symbol to show refugees are not just victims but fighters.\r\n\r\nThe striking flag is orange with a black horizontal stripe through its lower third, which reflects the design of a life jacket. Said’s inspiration came from her own experience as a refugee when she fled Syria and arrived at the island of Lesbos where she saw piles of abandoned life jackets.
