It was successively rebuilt in 1884 under designs by Charles J. Phipps and in 1900 by Frank Matcham. During the mid-twentieth century the Theatre Royal courted a lively variety scene which created a varied programme of touring acts. Performers included not only <i>The 1954 Madhatters,</i> but Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, as well as Eric Morecome and Ernie Wise. In 1954, Oliver Hardy hosted his birthday in the theatre.","physicalDescription":"Printed playbill with blue and red typography, mounted on white cardboard.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Tribe Brothers Ltd.","id":"A5907"},"association":{"text":"printers","id":"x31107"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2017JR6892"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES345239"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Playbills","id":"AAT27216"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Portsmouth","id":"x35708"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1954","earliest":"1954-01-01","latest":"1954-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by John Pearce","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"257","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"192","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Playbill for <i>The 1954 Madhatters</i>, Theatre Royal Portsmouth, 1954","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.643-2016"],"accessionNumberNum":"643","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2016,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2016-10-18","availableToBook":true}}
