She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale. \r\n\r\nIn the 1890s Potter sketched illustrations for fairy tales including Cinderella, Puss-in-Boots, Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty. Her later idea to publish ‘a set of fairy tales in thin volumes’ never materialised, but some of her manuscripts and sketches survive. \r\n\r\nThis rough preparatory sketch is thought to relate to the Grimms' fairy tale The Three Spinners, in which three fairy women, one with a swollen foot, complete a huge amount of spinning for a beautiful but lazy girl. In Potter’s drawing the girl appears to greet the spinner with a swollen foot. She annotated the sheet: ‘Old fairy woman is rather good. She should have an enormous foot.’ Potter studied Grimms' fairy tales as a young woman and included a written version of this particular tale as Chapter 11, ‘Habbitrot’, in her later book, The Fairy Caravan (Alexander McKay, 1929). This drawing has also been associated with Snow White.\r\n","physicalDescription":"A rough pencil and watercolour design with a girl at the door of a house talking to a little old woman holding a distaff.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beatrix Potter","id":"A18000"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"pencil and watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"},{"text":"Fairy Tales and Legends","id":"THES263583"},{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"}],"styles":[{"text":"British","id":"AAT111159"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2025PG8746"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES318120"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour (painting)","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1890s","earliest":"1885-01-01","latest":"1903-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Linder Bequest [plus object number; written on labels on the same line as the object number]","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"180","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"support","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"115","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"support","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Perhaps better / omit window, as / it is violent perspective'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in pencil by the artist, upper centre."},{"content":"'house door / hangs inside / the porch'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in pencil by the artist, upper right."},{"content":"'white washed house'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in pencil by the artist, centre left."},{"content":"'old fairy woman is rather good. / She should have an / enormous foot.'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in pencil by the artist, lower left."},{"content":"'The girl should be fair, / smiling & looking down at the / old woman, bending forward / to welcome her.'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in pencil by the artist, lower right."}],"objectHistory":"Drawn by Beatrix Potter, ca.1890s.
