Purchasing the theatre in 1868 after acting under previous manager  Henry Cornwall (who built the theatre in 1865), Rousby introduced a varied programme of comedy,  drama, farce and grand and comic opera. The theatre had already hosted the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1880 and 1882 for their productions of <i>H.M.S. R. Shirley as Robin Oakapple, with the acting manager Mr. R. Redford, conductor Mr. W. Robinson and stage manager Mr. R. Weathersby.\n\nThe scenery was painted by Mr. Bankes, with dances arranged by Mr. F. D'Auban, dreses by Madame Leon, military uniforms byt Messrs. Cater &amp; Co. (from designs from the Military Fine Art Gallery) and wigs by Mr. Clarkson.\n\nThe programme also makes note of the performance of Messrs. Livermore Bros. original Court Minstrels on Monday 1st August.
