By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries however, when this example was made, samplers were increasingly being used as an educational tool for girls from all social backgrounds. Samplers also had an increasingly pictoral focus by this time, often framed with embroidered border patterns; the use of moralising texts and motifs also served as an expression of dutiful piety. This example was made by Elizabeth Strangways, aged eight in 1829.","physicalDescription":"Wool stitches in green, red, blue, purple, orange, pink, blue and brown on linen ground. There is a simple pink border. The top section has the letters of the alphabet stitched in various colours, each line decorated with a different stitch in green, light blue and pink. Underneath can be seen floral motifs in pink and green. There is a central crown shaped image, with the letters G and R stitched in pink on either side. Above this text reads 'Elizabeth Strangway Aged 8 1829.' Along the bottom side are three large floral motifs, as well as birds, the image of a dog, and hearts. The maker has heavily used pink thread in much of the decoration.
