For Simone ten Hompel, form is ornament, and involves not only shape and outline but also texture. \"On the surface her work may appear cool and puritanical but the simplicity of its lines cannot hide its intrinsic emotional qualities...This quality of her work becomes readily apparent when one observes the richness and subtlety of the surfaces and interior spaces. There may be no obvious ornamentation on the surfaces but there is a richness present which undermines the formal austerity. Her work is about forms and lines which come together in harmony.\" (Amanda Fielding, <font -u>Silver Launch Liberty Ltd</font>, <font -i>Craft Notes</font> 1993, p.61)","physicalDescription":"This minimalist server has a superficial austerity yet there is a deeper richness of texture and form that emerges as one looks closer. The reverse scimitar blade is uniquely detailed with an elegant soldered cut, subtly displacing the metal. The tang of the blade slots into a solid handle, textured with a matte finish that enhances its heavy, severe form. However the rectangular cut-out reveals the blade end within a gilded recess, injecting warmth and colour to the design. The elegant fusion of gentle curves and stronger rectilinear forms create a distinctive and powerful piece. The silver \"a language in its own right\" is perfectly expressed in this simple design.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Simone Ten Hompel","id":"A17024"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sterling silver with gilded recess in handle","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Eating","id":"THES48963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AY6343"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES408700"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cake slice","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"hallmarked","id":"x32454"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1990","earliest":"1990-01-01","latest":"1990-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the American Friends of the V&A through the generosity of Professor B. Each artist craftsman has responded to the familiar functional form of the slice in an individual way, producing an astonishingly diverse range of interpretations. Each piece becomes an enchanting, decorative work of art. Professor Rabinovitch established a close rapport with each artist, always encouraging a freedom of creative expression. The response of these silversmiths has been not only to be strikingly imaginative but also to honour him by giving him their best work.\r\n\r\nThis collection is testimony to the significant contribution that one individual can make to supporting the craft of silversmithing.
