He is solely responsible for the design and prototype of every shoe, chiselling the wooden lasts on which they are moulded and carving the heels himself, once declaring ‘I’m king of the scissors.’ (O’Keefe, Linda, 'Shoes: A Celebration of Pumps, Sandals, Slippers and More', New York: Workman Publishing Company, Inc.).\r\n\r\nBlahnik relished the opportunity to solve the problem of the foot and the difficulty in achieving the proper balance between comfort, quality and design; yet he has achieved exactly that without any formal training in shoe-making. Each Blahnik shoe goes through about fifty different production processes, so his factory in Parabiago, Italy, turns out only about eighty pairs a day. His consummate workmanship and whimsical aesthetic are evident in this green suede sandal created for Ossie Clark’s catwalk show. This was shortly before Blahnik opened his first boutique in London in 1973. The shoe was re-made for the Victoria & Albert Museum’s exhibition on Ossie Clark which ran from 15 July 2003 to 2 May 2004.","physicalDescription":"These high-heeled green suede shoes are open-toed and have a platform sole. The upper is comprised of intertwining leaf motifs in contrasting shades of green suede, which are repeated on either side of the heel supports. The vine-like ankle straps end in a cherry motif, the red colour of which is repeated in the red leather inside lining and insole.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Blahnik, Manolo","id":"A7204"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"suede","id":"AAT193368"},{"text":"leather","id":"AAT11845"}],"techniques":[{"text":"shoe making","id":"x40339"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Suede and leather","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Footwear","id":"THES48951"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2015HU7803","2015HU7801","2012FE1987","2012FP8874"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"P","id":"THES296997"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"P","id":"THES296997"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}],[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2003","earliest":"2003-01-01","latest":"2003-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1971","earliest":"1971-01-01","latest":"1971-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Manolo Blahnik","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"210","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"15/01/2026","earliest":"2026-01-15","latest":"2026-01-15"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"160","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"15/01/2026","earliest":"2026-01-15","latest":"2026-01-15"},"part":"heel","note":"exclusive of straps"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"78","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"15/01/2026","earliest":"2026-01-15","latest":"2026-01-15"},"part":"single shoe","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"760","unit":"mm","qualifier":"approximate","date":{"text":"15/01/2026","earliest":"2026-01-15","latest":"2026-01-15"},"part":"each ankle strap","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"120","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"15/01/2026","earliest":"2026-01-15","latest":"2026-01-15"},"part":"heel height","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured by Conservation","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Manolo Blahnik / London'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscription on inner sole."},{"content":"'VERO / CUOIO / Hand made in Italy'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscription on outside sole."}],"objectHistory":"These shoes were remade by the designer to duplicate the original 1971 design for Ossie Clark.
