Some sources refer to 1829 as his birth date.He exhibited biblical and literary subjects at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. He travelled to northern India to paint portraits and watercolour landscapes and returned to England in 1870.\r\n\r\nThe scene was originally thought to have depicted the Imperial Assemplage of India at Delhi for the proclamation of Queen Victoria as Empresss of India in 1877 - hence the inscription on the mount. By this time, however, Landseer was back in England.\r\n ","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Paintings, watercolour, Darbar, George Landseer, 14 January 1860, Punjab","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Rohatgi P. and Parlett G., assisted by Imray S. and Godrej P. Indian Life and Landscape by Western Artists: Paintings and Drawings from the Victoria and Albert Museum, 17th to the early 20th century.
