His father was a Belgian opera singer as was his brother Jean Périer who was also a noted film actor. \r\nKam-Hill made his stage debut at the Gaîté Montparnasse in 1890 in his trademark rider’s costume with red coat, tight black trousers, top hat and white gloves. His performance evolved into a circus act for a time, singing on horseback at the Nouveau Cirque in Paris. Kam-Hill and Yvette Guilbert (regularly portrayed by Toulouse-Lautrec and Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen eg. CIRC.558-1962) regularly performed as a duo, becoming two of the most famous of the café-concert singers in 1890s Paris. He also appeared at the Folies Bergère and other now legendary venues of fin-de-siecle Paris. L'Horloge was a café-concert in the gardens of the Champs Élysées which existed from the 1840s to 1914. \r\nHe was recorded by Pathé between 1905 and 1907 so it is possible to listen to an audio recording of him singing.\r\nHe retired in 1910. \r\nThe artist is Leon Mayet (1858-1939) was predominantly a painter, exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1882 and 1936. He made a small number of notable colour lithograph posters in the 1890s, all in this full-length portrait format. Biographical information about Mayet appears to be otherwise relatively scant.\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Colour lithograph poster advertising a music hall show depicting the singer Kam-Hill performing on stage wearing his trademark red tail coat with the orchestra conductor, musicians, audience members, and a waiter shown in the hall beyond.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Leon Mayet","id":"A19610"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT190525"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph poster","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BB1996"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"514 (VA)","id":"THES49549"},"free":"","case":"PR","shelf":"161","box":"R"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1895","earliest":"1890-01-01","latest":"1899-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs J.T. Clarke was one of the first poster collectors and organised several exhibitions of these works at The Royal Aquarium in London. In the introduction to one of the exhibition's catalogues, Clarke showed great foresight when he proposed that the medium would hold enduring appeal and significance:\r\n\r\n\"The finest posters are, indeed, not only exemplars of artistic originality, beauty, and excellence in technique, but actual records of the daily life and interests of the age. From these documents the future historian may derive the fullest information concerning our food (physical and intellectual), our clothing, our diseases, and our remedies therefor - in short, concerning our vocations, our amusements, and our morals. What would not the archaeologist be willing to give for a set of such documents, relating, let us say, to Pericleian Athens or to Augustan Rome?\"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Colour lithograph poster by Léon Mayet advertising a performance of the singer Kam-Hill (Camille Périer, 1856-1935) at L'Horloge, Paris.
