Three generations of Oldham’s family worked in the Barnsley pits. Oldham has used finely ground coal dust from the very same pit to make the lettering in these posters.\nAll proceeds of book and poster sales from the project go towards the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign. The headline typeface, LIAISON, used in the poster and throughout the book, is based on the Liaison Committee for the Defence of the Trade Union (LCDTU) placards which were distributed during the strikes. FERRYMOOR is a second bespoke font designed by Oldham for the project which takes its inspiration from the reverse of the National Union of Mineworkers Ferrymoor Ridings Branch banner which has distinct letterforms. Both are made available for download and proceeds go to the aforementioned cause.\r\nIn the artist’s own words:\n\r\n“In Loving Memory of Work is about the collective creativity of working class people, people who dealt with their experiences and struggle creatively as a means of expression, and that’s a vital part of this particular period of history, and of humanity.”\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Poster by Craig Oldham made with coal dust and adhesive on black paper entitled 'In Loving Memory of Work'.
