The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company toured the production almost continuously from 1891 and 1982.\n\nThe Empire Theatre in Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, was built in 1908 by Maurice Bandman. Bandman was a theatre impresario who developed theatrical entertainments in India and the Far East in the early 20th century. Through his successful touring company the Bandman Opera Company he built and leased the Empire Theatre under Bandman Varieties Ltd., and opened theatres in Egypt and the Empire Theatre in Gibraltar.
