Their traditional jewellery retains many medieval characteristics lost elsewhere.\r\n\r\nWomen throughout the Nordic region usually used clasps to fasten their traditional clothing, not buttons.  These clasps vary considerably by region.\r\n\r\nThis clasp is typical of the jewellery worn by Sami women in Lapland.  In the past, the Sami were nomadic herders, moving their flocks of deer seasonally across the extreme north of Norway, Sweden, Finland and parts of Russia.  Although many have now settled in villages, they often retain their traditional costume.  The women’s costume included a decorative yoke, or collar, which was covered with small pieces of silver jewellery like this clasp. \r\n\r\nThe leaf shape of the clasp, and its pendant Gothic letters, are typical of Sami jewellery.  Gothic letters were widely used in European jewellery in the Middle Ages.  By the 19th century they only survived in Lapland, although they were frequently used for fashionable jewellery in the historical revival style.","physicalDescription":"Three-part clasp, consisting of two lozenge-shaped halves, with a central openwork dome over the hook and eye which link them.  The two lozenges are pierced and decorated like stylised leaves, and there are pendants shaped like Gothic letters hanging from each of the three parts.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraved","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"repousse","id":"AAT54023"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraved and repoussé silver, gilded on the front","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006BJ5122","2006BJ5123"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91M (VA)","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"69","shelf":"B","box":"6"},{"current":{"text":"91M (VA)","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"69","shelf":"B","box":"6"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Clasp","id":""}],[{"text":"Clasp","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Norway","id":"x29052"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Lapland","id":"x40768"},"association":{"text":"worn","id":"x34724"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Three-part silver-gilt clasp (trøyespenne) with pendants in the shape of gothic letters, Lapland (Norway), 19th century.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.499-1911","M.499A-1911"],"accessionNumberNum":"499","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1911,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Clasp [1]","Clasp [2]"],"assets":["2019LP9784","2019LP7048","2019LT3613","2019LT2116","2019LU8709","2019LW6473"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2007-06-29","availableToBook":false}}
