She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale. \r\n\r\nThis sheet of sketches includes three studies of mice dancing. It has been suggested that the mice sketches are early designs for the mice dancing in Potter’s Ninny Nanny Netticoat, a rhyme and illustration first conceived in 1897 that was redrawn for Cecily Parsley’s Nursery Rhymes (published 1922). The finished verse goes:\r\n\r\nNinny Nanny Netticoat, \r\nIn a white petticoat, \r\nWith a red nose, - \r\nThe longer she stands, \r\nThe shorter she grows.\r\n\r\nThere is also some relationship with an illustration in The Fairy Caravan (published 1929; p.164 in the 1992 Frederick Warne edition), which shows three mice dancing: one is quite similar to the drawing on the left of this sheet. Mice were an important feature of Potter’s work, perhaps most famously in her book The Tale of the Two Bad Mice (published 1904) and in this and the other titles mentioned she looked back at earlier sketches as a source of inspiration.\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Three studies of mice dancing on a single sheet.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beatrix Potter","id":"A18000"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"pen and ink and pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Anthropomorphism","id":"THES252998"},{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"}],"styles":[{"text":"British","id":"AAT111159"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2018LH0164","2016JH8287"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES317966"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1897","earliest":"1892-01-01","latest":"1901-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Linder Bequest [plus object number; written on labels on the same line as the object number]","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"121","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"207","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed on folder (no longer in use) by Leslie Linder, 'Sketches for rhymes'."}],"objectHistory":"Drawn by Beatrix Potter, ca.1897.
