In front of him is seating with numerous female characters dressed in long lightly coloured dresses and hats. Behind them, at the centre of stage is a large group of male characters spectating the racing. They are being held back by police officers in uniform, linking arms to stop the crowd. The crowd is mostly made up of men in dark suits, wearing a range of bowler hats, boater hats, flatcaps and top hats. At the centre of the scene is a jockey, who is collapsed into the arms of Noel Ferrers. The jockey is wearing a black leather jacket with tall dark boots and lightly coloured trousers. Noel Ferrers, dressed in a dark suit, is attempting to catch the jockey as he falls. James Hogg, standing in profile next to him is wearing a lightly coloured suit with a lightly coloured bowler hat.
