She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale. \r\n\r\nBeatrix Potter made many imaginary drawings in the 1890s, before her books had been published. This highly finished drawing is known as ‘The Mice in their Storeroom’. Two mice are shown with sacks of grain and hanging ears of wheat, one of the mice holding a bunch of keys. The Potter scholar Leslie Linder noted that the setting of the scene was based on ‘one of the back passages at Bedwell Lodge’, Hertfordshire, which Beatrix Potter visited in the summer of 1891. A detailed study Potter made of the back stairs at Bedwell Lodge in the collection is dated 21 September 1891 and corresponds with the background. The potting shed at Bedwell Lodge would later inspire Potter’s illustration of Mr McGregor’s tool-shed in The Tale of Peter Rabbit.\r\n\r\nThere is also a preparatory study for this drawing in the collection.\r\n","physicalDescription":"A highly finished pen and ink and wash drawing showing two mice in a passage, with sacks of grain and ears of wheat on the left and store cupboards on the right; the front mouse holds a ring of keys.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beatrix Potter","id":"A18000"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"},{"text":"wash","id":"AAT182748"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"pen and ink with grey wash on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"},{"text":"Anthropomorphism","id":"THES252998"},{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"},{"text":"Tourism & Travel","id":"THES250702"}],"styles":[{"text":"British","id":"AAT111159"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2024NY3743","2024NY3744","2016JG8365"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"SK Temp 6","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Bedwell Lodge","id":"x40055"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1891","earliest":"1886-01-01","latest":"1895-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Linder Bequest [plus object number; written on labels on the same line as the object number]","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"220","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"160","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Drawn by Beatrix Potter, most likely at Bedwell Lodge in the summer of 1891.
