She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale. \r\n\r\nThis design of a ‘Jackdaw Sweep’ has been linked to a passage in Beatrix Potter’s journal from Saturday 30 July 1892, when Potter was staying at Birnam in Perthshire: ‘I was busy in the morning finishing a drawing for Nister & Co. for which, by the way, they have not paid.’ Ernest Nister & Co. published a number of Potter’s early imaginary drawings in the 1890s, including her series ‘A frog he would a-fishing go’, for which there are numerous drawings in the Linder Bequest. \r\n\r\nPotter made many closely observed studies of animals from nature, which informed her imaginary illustrations. She particularly admired the bird illustrations of natural history illustrators Thomas Bewick and Jemima Blackburn: she received a copy of the latter’s Birds Drawn from Nature for her tenth birthday and later met Mrs Blackburn. \r\n","physicalDescription":"Drawing in vignette format of an upright jackdaw seen in profile, with sweeps under its wing.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beatrix Potter","id":"A18000"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"watercolour, white gouache and pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"},{"text":"Anthropomorphism","id":"THES252998"},{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"}],"styles":[{"text":"British","id":"AAT111159"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2015HK7675","2016JG8299"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"SK Temp 7","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour (painting)","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"30 July 1892","earliest":"1892-07-30","latest":"1892-07-30"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Linder Bequest [plus object number; written on labels on the same line as the object number]","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"165","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"125","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'drawn for Nister & co'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in pencil, lower left."}],"objectHistory":"Drawn by Beatrix Potter, very probably at Birnam on Saturday 30 July 1892.
