Using flat areas of colour, outline and sinuous silhouette, the French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) depicts the dancer Jane Avril and the critic Edouard Dujardin in the foreground, with the singer Yvette Guilbert on stage. Divan Japonais was one of the many Paris haunts of Toulouse-Lautrec. It is still a nightclub, since 1994 operating under the name Le Divan du Monde.","physicalDescription":"Colour lithograph poster depicting the interior of a café-concert located at 75 Rue des Martyrs in Paris. The singer (Yvette Guilbert) is onstage, obscured in the top left-hand corner but is recognisable from her elbow-length dark gloves and stance. Jane Avril is seated in the foreground on the edge of the orchestra pit. A man stands behind her wearing a top hat and carrying a cane. Signed and lettered with titles and printer's name.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec","id":"A6626"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Ancourt, Edward","id":"AUTH406327"},"association":{"text":"printers","id":"AAT25732"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"pen and Indian ink","id":"x47322"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[{"text":"Post-impressionist","id":"AAT21508"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AU2912","2017JU1779","2019ME9625"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MB2E","shelf":"DR108","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1892","earliest":"1892-01-01","latest":"1892-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"January 1893","earliest":"1893-01-01","latest":"1893-01-31"},"association":{"text":"first issued","id":"x47151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"CIRC.272-1964","id":"O74624"},"association":"Duplicate"}],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs J.T. The future of the club was somewhat uncertain. Edouard Fournier (whose name appears on the lower left of the poster) had recently taken over from Jehan Sarrazin, a poet, who owned the Divan from 1888 and who had tempted in customers with free Provencal olives. The change had caused some of the stars to move on. One aim of the poster then must have to been to imply to customers that all was still in order. The reasoning behind Lautrec's decision to crop Guilbert's figure was surely to insinuate that she still performed at the club, without incurring the legal risks of direct representation'."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Taken from Departmental Circulation Register 1962:\r\n\r\n\"Divan Japonais\" 75 Rue des Martyrs\" Poster- colour lithograph 1892\r\nHenri de Toulouse Lautrec\r\nPrinted E.
