The outside of the boots, including the sole, are made of cream silk, and the lining is in a plain cream cotton.  They are decorated with green silk nalbinding and a cream button from which two twisted silk cords with tassles hang.  \r\n\r\nNalbinding (Nålbinding in Danish; 'binding with a needle') is the craft of making a textile from loops of yarn or thread. It's worked with a needle and it involves passing the full length of the working thread through each loop, and as such predates both knitting and crochet. In this case, the continuos silk loops crafted by nalbinding would have been made separately and then stitched to the boot. The combination of elaborate decoration and expensive materials suggest that the boot was probably made for the child of a wealthy family.","physicalDescription":"Cream silk with green silk nalbinding, hook and eye fastenings, decorative button and tassle, plain cotton lining, hand made","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"},{"text":"cotton thread","id":"x34841"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand sewn","id":"AAT257459"},{"text":"tatting","id":"AAT53641"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk decorated with silk nalbinding (series of loops produced with a needle)","categories":[{"text":"Children's clothes","id":"THES48979"},{"text":"Footwear","id":"THES48951"},{"text":"Children and childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2007BP8870"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES306757"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES306757"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Baby's boot","id":""}],[{"text":"Baby's boot","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"early 19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"MA/1/H926","id":"ARC163180"},"association":"Archive record"}],"creditLine":"Given by Messrs Harrods Ltd.","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"These were part of a very large collection of items of dress and accessories which was given to the Museum by Harrods, the department store, in 1913. The collection had been formed by the artist Talbot Hughes, who wrote a book on the history of dress, illustrated with photographs of models wearing items from his collection. A large firm in America had offered to buy the collection and present it to the Metropolitan Museum, New York, but Hughes did not want it to go abroad. At the suggestion of Cecil Harcourt Smith of the V&A, Harrods bought it for £2,500 and gave it to the Museum for the 'public good'. Harrods displayed the collection for three weeks in December 1913.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cream silk baby's boot with green silk nalbinding decoration, hook fastenings, decorative button and tassle and cotton lining; English, early 19th century.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.537-1913","T.537A-1913"],"accessionNumberNum":"537","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1913,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Baby's boot [1]","Baby's boot [2]"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-22","recordCreationDate":"2007-06-08","availableToBook":true}}
