Rodin explored the subject over a number of years, the earliest dating from before 1886, and produced it in several other versions, as well as drawing it repeatedly.\r\n\r\nThis marble version was carved by one of his trusted assistants, under his supervision. This was normal workshop practice at the time and it is known that Rodin himself did not carve marble sculptures. The contrast of the rough-hewn rock with the smooth surface of the figures indicates Rodin's admiration for the work of Michelangelo.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rodin","id":"A6634"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"marble","id":"AAT11443"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Marble","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AX9986","2006AX9967","2006AX9946","2006AX9911","2006AX9867"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"21 (VA)","id":"THES49848"},"free":"","case":"FS","shelf":"WN","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Group Cupid and Psyche","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1898","earliest":"1893-01-01","latest":"1902-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Rodin in November 1914","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"101","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Rodin in November 1914","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Group, Cupid and Psyche, by Auguste Rodin, French, marble, ca. 1898","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Hawkins, Jennifer, Rodin Sculptures, London: Victoria and Albert Museum, 1975, p.26, ill.24"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Alley, Ronald.
