The complete outfit consisted of a leather cap (remade by Falconer in 1994), a Trailmaster leather waistcoat (USA), the trousers and leather platform shoes (UK). The outfit reflected a style of ‘Soul Boy’ dress worn by some British men in the early 1970s. \r\n\r\nDerek Falconer bought the items in Shaftesbury Avenue in the early 1970s. The distinctive ‘Soul Boy’ look was popularised by pop stars including Errol Brown, lead singer of Hot Chocolate, and Isaac Hayes, who wrote the musical score for the 1971 film <i>Shaft</i>.","physicalDescription":"Trousers of brown leather.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Silton","id":"A22783"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"leather","id":"AAT11845"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Leather","categories":[{"text":"African Diaspora","id":"THES48873"},{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"},{"text":"Streetstyle exhibition 1994","id":"THES282706"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2018LB9202","2006AT5340"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CNTX","id":"THES49199"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Trousers","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1970s","earliest":"1970-01-01","latest":"1979-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1994/113, Streetstyle exhibition 1994-1995, in the exhibition it was part of an outfit called 'Soul early 1970s UK/USA' (includes the waistcoat T.50-1994, the shoes T.51-1994 and the hat T.52-1994).\r\n\r\nWorn by Derek Falconer of Crazy Clothes.","historicalContext":"This garment was purchased from Derek Falconer to form part of the V & A’s exhibition ‘Streetstyle’.
