At christening and other ceremonial occasions, families wrapped their babies in christening blankets or bearing cloths. They were of rich materials, typically silk velvet, or silk woven or embroidered with a decorative pattern. This example is made up out of  panels of a complex woven silk dress fabric. Such blankets displayed the wealth and status of their owners. They were used only on special occasions and treated then with great care, passing them down through generations.","physicalDescription":"A christening mantle of brocaded silk in pinks with some green and blue.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"brocading","id":"AAT53648"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk brocaded with coloured silks","categories":[{"text":"Birth","id":"THES48990"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Children and childhood","id":"THES48980"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AC7223","2012FL8290","2018KX4338"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES309998"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Woven silk","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Spitalfields","id":"x29420"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1725-1730","earliest":"1725-01-01","latest":"1730-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"121.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"measurement converted from department register"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"83.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"measurement converted from department register"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Brocaded silk Christening blanket, 1725-1730, English; Spitalfields","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Flowers","id":"x35571"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.76-1936"],"accessionNumberNum":"76","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1936,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-22","recordCreationDate":"1999-12-15","availableToBook":true}}
