It was displayed – with velvet, plastic and jewelled shoes by Sabiba - in the exhibition <i>Streetstyle, From Sidewalk to Catwalk, 1940 to Tomorrow</i> held at the V&A in 1994-5. The outfit reflected a style of ‘Ragga’ dress worn by some black British women in the 1990s.\r\n\r\nRagga derives from the word ‘Raggamuffin’, originally a derogatory term for delinquent Jamaican youths. Ragga began in the mid-1980s in Jamaican dancehalls before spreading throughout the African diaspora. It marked a stark contrast with Rastafarianism through its celebration of individual wealth and success and displays of flamboyant dress. Ragga outfits frequently used layered textures – velvet, lace, fishnet, applique, leather, suede, brocade, Lycra, ruffles and different shades of denim – to make a strong visual impact.","physicalDescription":"Pink linen and sheer polyester suit trimmed with gold braid.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dunbar, Andrew","id":"A19940"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"polyester","id":"x40781"}],"techniques":[{"text":"machine sewing","id":"AAT257463"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen and polyester, trimed with gold braid","categories":[{"text":"African Diaspora","id":"THES48873"},{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Streetstyle exhibition 1994","id":"THES282706"},{"text":"Caribbean","id":"THES286921"}],"styles":[{"text":"Caribbean","id":"AAT107947"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2018LB9423","2018LB9424","2006AT2838"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES309709"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES309709"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jacket","id":""}],[{"text":"Trousers","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1994","earliest":"1994-01-01","latest":"1994-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Weight","value":"1.38","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Jacket and trousers","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1994/2273, Streetstyle exhibition 1994-1995, in the exhibition it was part of an outfit called 'Ragga UK 1994' (inlcudes the shoes T.158-1995).\r\nThis is a woman's Ragga outfit.","historicalContext":"'Ragga UK 1994.
