However, after a long absence heels began to make a comeback around the mid-century. Low-cut slip-on shoes or 'court' shoes were the most popular form of women's footwear during the 1880's and 1890's. \r\n\r\nThe curved construction of the heels on this brown velvet pair was influenced by the heel shapes from the previous century. It was known as the 'louis' after the famous French kings of the 1700s. The diamanté buckle is also a reference to the extravagant styles of the eighteenth century although here it is smaller and less showy than its predecessors.","physicalDescription":"Brown velvet court shoe with pointed toe, scooped throat with paste buckle and small heel; edges with turned brown silk ribbon, pair of folded side seams; brown satin insole, cream leather sock, leather sole.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"velvet","id":"AAT133711"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"satin","id":"AAT132902"},{"text":"leather","id":"AAT11845"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"},{"text":"diamanté","id":"x33303"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk velvet, with silk ribbon, lined with satin and leather, metal and diamanté buckle","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Footwear","id":"THES48951"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2014HF0647","2014HF0673","2006AW2439","2017KB2186"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES325974"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES325974"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}],[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1885-1890","earliest":"1885-01-01","latest":"1890-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Ingram family","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'23952'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Both shoes inscribed on inner side of sock"},{"content":"Both shoes labelled with squashed hexagonal silk label set into leather of sock, 'C.
