The artist cuts the tubes into sections and layers them in moulds before they are fused in a kiln. The complex structures he creates are deformed by the heat of the kiln. As he can only partially control this ‘slumping’ process, this technique introduces an aspect of chance into the work. The results are expressive, dynamic and sometimes ethereal sculptures that capture light and ‘come alive’ when you move around them. He attended the Pilchuck Glass School at Stanwood, near Seattle and gained experience working in several glass factories in Sweden. In 2001 he set up his own studio in Berlin as an independent glass artist.\n\r\nFrom the early 2000s, Weiland made sculptural forms, using kiln-fused borosilicate glass tubes. ‘White Ghost’ is a classic example of his work from this period. Just prior to 2015 Weiland changed direction in his work, instead using laminated fibre-glass and incorporating various sorts of plastics, which allow him to work on a larger scale and to introduce more colour.\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"‘White Ghost’, a glass form of fused glass tubes by Julius Weiland, Germany (Berlin), 2009","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"chance","id":"x36362"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.25-2016"],"accessionNumberNum":"25","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":2016,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2016-05-11","availableToBook":false}}
