The complete outfit consisted of this purple/orange two-tone crushed velvet jacket with gold braid trim, black/red two-tone crushed velvet trousers (both by Against All Oz) and Bally leather shoes.\r\n\r\n‘Ragga’ derives from the word ‘Raggamuffin’, originally a derogatory term for delinquent Jamaican youths. Ragga began in the mid-1980s in Jamaican dancehalls before spreading throughout the African diaspora. It marked a stark contrast with Rastafarianism through its flamboyant dress and celebration of individual wealth and success. Ragga outfits frequently use layered textures and colour to make a strong visual impact. \r\n\r\n“I made [a suit] for myself and then everyone kept asking about it and I ended up making ten more. It’s for the evening – I'd wear it to a blues or a dance, but I have worn it during the day, when I've rolled up the trousers, tucked in the shirt and worn it with trainers. In the evening I'd wear it with a pair of Italian cut shoes’ (Oz).","physicalDescription":"Purple/orange two-tone crushed velvet jacket with gold braid trim.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Against All Oz","id":"A19967"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"velvet weave","id":"x46483"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Crushed velvet","categories":[{"text":"African Diaspora","id":"THES48873"},{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"},{"text":"Streetstyle exhibition 1994","id":"THES282706"},{"text":"Caribbean","id":"THES286921"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2018LC0987","2006AT2834","2006AT3798"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES309697"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jacket","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1993","earliest":"1993-01-01","latest":"1993-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1994/206, Streetstyle exhibition 1994-1995, in the exhibition it was part of an outfit called 'Ragga UK 1994' (includes the trousers T.158-1994 and the shoes T.658-1995).","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Jacket, crushed velvet, Against All Oz, London, Great Britain, 1993","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Surfers, Soulies, Skinheads & Skaters : Subcultural Style from the Forties to the Nineties","id":"AUTH352425"},"details":"","free":"Described in the exhibition publication, part of an outfit called 'Ragga UK 1994'."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.157-1994"],"accessionNumberNum":"157","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1994,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2007-05-22","availableToBook":true}}
