It was worn in the 1940s by Bulee \"Slim\" Gaillard, an African-American jazz singer, songwriter and musican. Notable for his style - his trousers were said to be ‘sharper than a Gillette blade’ – Slim enjoyed a revival in the late 1970s. He remained true to his original style but added a beret (always red or white) which he customised by washing and stretching it, sometimes pulling off the tail and wearing the brim on the outside.","physicalDescription":"Red woollen felt beret.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"AAT243430"}],"techniques":[{"text":"felting","id":"AAT232049"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Felted wool","categories":[{"text":"Hats and headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2020MP9323"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES305798"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Beret","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1940s","earliest":"1940-01-01","latest":"1949-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Gillian Weller","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Worn by Bulee \"Slim\" Gaillard.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Red felt beret worn by Bulee \"Slim\" Gaillard, USA, 1940s.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"De la Haye, Amy and Cathie Dingwall. <u>Surfers Soulies Skinheads & Skaters, Subcultural style from the forties to the nineties</u>.
