Lucas's successful interpretation of this subject and its companion, Departing Storm (see E.740, 741, 742, 747 - 2016 and E.1766-1991), led directly to the inception of the English Landscape project and it is upon them that Constable's entire mezzotint heritage depends. However, a composition by John Constable of this subject is not recorded and it is possible that Lucas made this mezzotint after his own design to show Constable of what he was capable. \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Constable, John RA","id":"N2134"},"association":{"text":"painter","id":"x36959"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Lucas, David","id":"A16057"},"association":{"text":"engraver","id":"x30813"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Hollyer, Samuel","id":"AUTH315953"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"mezzotint","id":"AAT53233"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Mezzotint","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2016JG7600"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"CLB","shelf":"5","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"prints","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1829","earliest":"1829-01-01","latest":"1829-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Accepted in lieu of Inheritance Tax by H M Government from the estate of the Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd and allocated to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2015. Lennox-Boyd formed the finest collection of British mezzotints in private hands anywhere, totalling approximately 50,000 prints. While his main focus was mezzotints, his collection also contained 18th century picture frames, antique women’s shoes, fans and printed handkerchiefs. He also collected printed ephemera, examples of which the museum has also acquired, and watercolours in the 1970s. In 1963 Lennox-Boyd bought Sanders of Oxford, on the High Street, transforming it from a bookshop into a premier seller of fine prints, maps, engravings and 20th-century etchings. He published several works including <i>Theatre Prints in the Age of Garrick </i>and <i>George Stubbs: The Complete Engraved Works.</i>","historicalContext":"Shirley thought that the image was based on a watercolour attributed to Constable which was in 1930 in the collection of Major P.W. Leggatt. Doubt has since been cast on this watercolour; according to the sales catalogue for Campbell Fine Art, from whom another progress proof of Approaching Storm (E.1766-1991) was purchased, it may well be a reversed copy of the mezzotint.","briefDescription":"Mezzotint, Approaching Storm, View on the Thames, David Lucas after John Constable, London 1829.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Shirley 1, progress proof Shirley a\r\nWedmore 42\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.739-2016"],"accessionNumberNum":"739","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2016,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Previous owner's number","id":"THES57329"},"number":"P38,295"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2016-05-04","availableToBook":false}}
