It included over 13,000 exhibits and was the first international exhibition of manufactured products. \r\n\r\nThe exhibition attracted more than six million visitors, equivalent to a third of the population of Great Britain. This watercolour is from a group of images reproduced as colour lithographs in <u>Recollections of the Great Exhibition</u>, a lavish contemporary souvenir guide. The profits from the Great Exhibition were used to fund several science and art initiatives in South Kensington. They included what is now the Victoria and Albert Museum, whose earliest surviving building was erected in 1857.\r\n\r\nThis work shows a display of church furnishings and fabrics by the Bolton draper Gilbert French. A small advertisement for the firm can be seen in the lower left corner. Exhibits from the display of heavy machinery are visible in the right background.","physicalDescription":"Watercolour of an interior view of the Great Exhibition - 'Church Furniture', ","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dolby, Edwin Thomas","id":"A19410"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"gouache","id":"AAT70114"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour and gouache over pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"},{"text":"Great Exhibition","id":"THES48945"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BJ8336","2023NP7290"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"WD","shelf":"215","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1851","earliest":"1851-01-01","latest":"1851-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"19538:8","id":"O134846"},"association":"Reproduction"}],"creditLine":"Purchased with Art Fund support and assistance from the Friends of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"27.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"37.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Watercolour, Interior view of the Great Exhibition - 'Church Furniture', by Edwin Thomas Dolby, 1851","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Julius Bryant, ed. <u>Art and Design for All.
