She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913.  The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.  \r\n\r\nThe sketch on the front of this sheet is a study for a finished drawing by Beatrix Potter also in the V&A collection entitled ‘The Mice in their Storeroom’. In the finished version of the composition the two mice are shown with sacks of grain and hanging ears of wheat, one of the mice holding a bunch of keys. The Potter scholar Leslie Linder noted that the setting of the scene was based on ‘one of the back passages at Bedwell Lodge’, Hertfordshire, which Beatrix Potter visited in the summer of 1891.
