A stag hunt is depicted here, and the design of the fabric allows it to be read like a story, progressing in a series of scenes, as the huntsmen and hounds gallop in pursuit of the stag, and finally bring it to bay. The Englishness of the scene is emphasised by the background and landscape. The hunt is pursued through the estate of a great house seen in the distance.  Nearer is a Gothic hunting lodge, and picturesque ruins. This interest in medieval architectural styles reflected a romantic nostalgia for England’s past.\r\n\r\nThe cotton has been printed using an engraved metal cylinder. This development in technology allowed fabrics to be printed much more quickly and cheaply than they had been before, when fabric was printed with either woodblocks or flat metal plates. It could take just four minutes to roller-print by machine a length of cotton which would have taken six hours to print by hand.","physicalDescription":"Length of furnishing fabric, roller-printed in brown on pale yellow cotton. Loom width, cut top edge, hemmed bottom edge.\r\nHunting scenes, including men and women on horses at gallop with hounds in pursuit of stag; a stag brought to bay by a tree stump, and gothic ruins with huntsmen and woman on horseback standing by. Other buildings including gothic hunting lodge. \r\n\r\nThe design illustrates early 19th century taste for gothic ruins and architectural features.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"roller-printing","id":"x33305"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Roller-printed cotton","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2008BT6456","2008BT6455","2013GA7054","2018KW8196"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"013","id":"THES310684"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Furnishing fabric","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Manchester","id":"x28993"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1818-1824","earliest":"1818-01-01","latest":"1824-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"180","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"85","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"47.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"pattern repeat","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"plus approx. 1 cm turned up at bottom","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Miss Amy Pleadwell, of Boston, USA, for $20.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Furnishing fabric, roller-printed, hunting scenes in brown on yellow, made ca. 1820, England","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"English Printed Textiles 1720-1836, HMSO 1960, pl. 45"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Loan Exhibition of English Chintz, HMSO 1960, no. 284"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"hunting scene","id":"x41940"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.68-1957"],"accessionNumberNum":"68","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1957,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2007-05-11","availableToBook":true}}
