English delftware is tin-glazed pottery that was made in the Britain from around the mid-16th century to the late-18th century. The term resulted from the tin-glazed pottery that came from the Netherlands, which it often copied or emmulated. \n\nThis small cat figure is tin-glazed and decorated with cobalt blue. A bubble-like pattern is visible across the glazed surface. This will have occurred during the firing process as, when heated, calcium carbonate releases carbon dioxide which can result in bubbles being trapped in the glaze layers. Here it is most notable where it has created a particularly distinctive effect upon the cobalt oxide decoration.\n\n ","physicalDescription":"Delftware figure of a sitting cat, tin-glazed and decorated with cobalt blue.\r\n\r\nAll of the glaze surface shows a bubble-like pattern (resulting from the firing process).\n\nThe blue decoration shows a pendant on a chain around the cat's neck and bubble-like markings on the face, particularly the eyes, ears, mouth and the top of the head. The figure sits on an oval base, the top of which is decorated with a dark-blue which has been permeated with white 'bubbles'. This decoration rises up on both sides to give definition to the cat's back legs. The edge of the oval base is white with a continuous line of blue dots. The cat's spine has been drawn on with a spidery, zig-zagging blue line, with short offshooting lines.\n\nThere are three noticeable pinhole craters on the cat's leftside. There are also a number of very small pinholes scattered across both sides of the cat.\n\r\nThe glaze on the nose, ears and areas around the base of the figure are very worn, making the earthenware beneath visible.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cobalt oxide","id":"AAT233422"},{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"tin-glaze","id":"AAT233436"}],"techniques":[{"text":"tin glazing","id":"x36216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, tinglazed and decorated with cobalt oxide.\r\n\r\nThe numerous small 'pinholes' in the glaze surface will have been the result of bubbles of gas coming through the glaze as it was fired.\n\r\nThe bubble-like appearance of the glaze surface and the cobalt oxide decoration is also due to the firing process as, when heated, calcium carbonate releases carbon dioxide which can result in bubbles being trapped in the glaze layers.","categories":[{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2016JH7487","2016JH7499","2016JH7500","2016JH7488"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES395839"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure","id":"AAT189808"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1725-1775","earliest":"1725-01-01","latest":"1775-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Mrs Liane Richards","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"English delftware figure of a cat, decorated in blue, mid-eighteenth century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.13-2016"],"accessionNumberNum":"13","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":2016,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2016-03-17","availableToBook":true}}
