In 2009, while she was completing her M.A. at Aichi University of Education, where she was taught by the inspirational Nakashima Harumi, she was selected for the exhibition ‘The Power of Decoration – A Viewpoint on Contemporary Studio Crafts’ held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. She has exhibited annually since then, and has been the recipient of a number of significant awards. Her inclusion in last summer’s 10th Paramita Ceramic Arts Award Exhibition is conclusive evidence of the high regard in which she is now held.\r\n\r\nHattori’s particular method of working, which she hit upon as a student, involves making a coil-built internal form on to which she lutes small, open-celled circular components squeezed into shape from thinly pinched strips of clay. The enormous number of components needed to cover the surfaces of her characteristically twisting forms – reminiscent in the case of this piece of a Mobius strip – makes for extremely time-consuming and painstaking work that is belied by the monumental quality of her finished products. These are fired unglazed in an electric kiln.\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2018LC1800","2016JD1069","2018LC1801","2018LC1803","2018LC1804","2018LC1805","2018LC1806","2018LC1807","2018LC1808"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES398872"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"AAT47090"}],[{"text":"Vessel form","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"300","unit":"mm","qualifier":"Approximately","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"400","unit":"mm","qualifier":"Approximately","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sculpture, 'Kasanaru Hibi' ('Day after / upon Day'), hand-built unglazed porcelain, Japan, by Hattori Makiko (b.1984), 2015\r\nJapan, modern crafts, studio, ceramics","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.71-2016"],"accessionNumberNum":"71","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":2016,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-19","recordCreationDate":"2016-03-08","availableToBook":true}}
