Mainly working in oil, but also occasionally in watercolour, his still-lifes closely followed those of the Dutch Golden Age masters in form and composition. Lance’s work is characterized by his bold use colour, meticulous attention to detail and mastery of texture. The house in the background of this painting has been identified as Preston House in Kent, the he seat of Lance’s patron Edward Ladd Betts. Lance presumably based his view on the architect's designs, as Preston Hall was not rebuilt in the Jacobean style until 1850.
