She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale. \r\n\r\nBeatrix Potter first visited Near Sawrey by the shore of Esthwaite Water, one of the Lake District’s smaller lakes, with her parents in 1896. She wrote in her journal as her visit drew to a close: ‘I think one of my pleasantest memories of Esthwaite is sitting on Oatmeal Crag on a Sunday afternoon…’ Esthwaite Water became Potter’s favourite lake; she bought her first property there, Hill Top, in 1905, and settled permanently at nearby Castle Cottage following her marriage to William Heelis in 1913. She made many drawings of the lake and the surrounding landscape. This watercolour study shows a field of corn at harvest time, reflecting Potter’s interest in the working landscape. \r\n\r\nThis watercolour was circulated around the members of a drawing society to which Beatrix Potter belonged in London. She used the pen name ‘Bunny’, and the back of the work is inscribed ‘Harvest. Bunny’. It is also annotated with the comments of the various members of the society. Most of the comments praise the distance and remain unconvinced by the foreground. They include: ‘The distance is very nice. Its foreground might have been made more important.’; ‘Rather daring subject.’; ‘If the picture could be cut in half, the top half would be charming’; ‘Background very good.’; ‘Hay & corn I fear much discoloured.’ Potter herself commented in a 1902 letter to her editor, Norman Warne, that of the drawings ‘sent to a small drawing society’, ‘those with a bit of landscape were the favourites’. \r\n","physicalDescription":"Watercolour landscape with a golden field the foreground, trees and a lake in the midground and hills beyond the distant shore.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beatrix Potter","id":"A18000"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"},{"text":"Landscapes","id":"THES250800"},{"text":"Agriculture","id":"THES250518"},{"text":"Farming","id":"THES277573"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"},{"text":"Tourism & Travel","id":"THES250702"}],"styles":[{"text":"British","id":"AAT111159"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2019MG9355","2019MG9358","2019MG9357"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES317972"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour (painting)","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Esthwaite Water","id":"x45929"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1896-1902","earliest":"1896-01-01","latest":"1902-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Linder Bequest [plus object number; written on labels on the same line as the object number]","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"255","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"360","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'A view from Sawrey, overlooking Esthwaite Water, and Coniston Fells in the background.'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed on mount."},{"content":"'Harvest.
