Their practical function was to fasten garments together, especially at the neck. Shaped as rings, with a long central pin, these brooches varied enormously in size and in decoration. This example is bifaceted, allowing for a line of Latin inscription at the inner and outer face, rather than the more usual type which has an inscription on the front and on the back. The outer facet is inscribed 'IES MI CIN VI', the inner: 'DA VI NII LV'. The meaning of these inscriptions is obscure, and they are not easily translatable.","physicalDescription":"Ring brooch, gold, bifaceted, engraved on the obverse with inscriptions in Lombardic lettering, on the outer facet: 'IES MI CIN VI' ; on the inner facet: 'DA VI NII LV'. The meaning of these inscriptions is obscure, and they are not easily translatable. The centre point of the curved is marked by a quatrefoil on three sides, the pin head with foliate decoration. The reverse flat and without decoration.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold, engraved","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AC4095","2009BX8473","2006AC4114"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES407833"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Ring brooch","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1300-1400","earliest":"1300-01-01","latest":"1400-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dame Joan Evans","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"1.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'IES MI CIN VI'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Obverse, on the outer facet"},{"content":"'DA VI NII LV'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Obverse, on the inner facet"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Ring brooch, gold, bifaceted and with inscriptions, English, 1300-1400","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Lightbown, Ronald. <u>Medieval European Jewellery: with a catalogue of the collection in the Victoria & Albert Museum</u>.
