It included over 13,000 exhibits and was the first international exhibition of manufactured products. \r\n\r\nThe exhibition attracted more than six million visitors, equivalent to a third of the population of Great Britain. This watercolour is from a group of images reproduced as colour lithographs in <u>Recollections of the Great Exhibition</u>, a lavish contemporary souvenir guide. The profits from the Great Exhibition were used to fund several science and art initiatives in South Kensington. They included what is now the Victoria and Albert Museum, whose earliest surviving building was erected in 1857.\r\n\r\nThis view of the Fine Arts Court shows a display including examples of both secular and religious virtuoso carving. It is centred around an ornamental neo-Gothic font that was probably made by J. Castle of Oxford. The pair of mounted jug-shaped vases flanking the Crucifixion are by a London manufacturer called Egisippo Norchi.","physicalDescription":"Watercolour drawing","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Michael, J","id":"A19254"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"gouache","id":"AAT70114"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour and gouache over pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Great Exhibition","id":"THES48945"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BJ8129","2023NP7960"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"WD","shelf":"215","box":"B"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1851","earliest":"1851-01-01","latest":"1851-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"19538:5","id":"O134851"},"association":"Reproduction"}],"creditLine":"Purchased with Art Fund support and assistance from the Friends of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"288","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"watercolour","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"382","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"watercolour","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"375","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"support board","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"467","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"support board","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Interior view of the Great Exhibition - 'Part of the Fine Arts Court', by J.
