It formed part of an outfit which consisted of a black felt hat; this poly-wool suit with horn buttons; a cotton shirt; a silk tie and leather shoes. The outfit reflected a style of dress worn by West Indian men in Britain in the 1950s. \r\n\r\nIn creating the outfit Lilliard was advised by Caribbean fabric suppliers, the tailor Mark Savile and members of his own family who came to Britain in the 1950s. In the Caribbean it was common for men to wear brightly-coloured, generously-cut suits on an everyday basis and they continued to do so when they emigrated. In addition to their flamboyant use of colour the cut of suits made in the Caribbean was distinctive: trousers were high-waisted, had low seats and baggy legs which tapered to the ankle. These were teamed with double-breasted jackets with wide lapels. These ‘sharp’ suits provided a lively contrast to the more conservative cut and colours favoured by other British men.","physicalDescription":"Blue poly-wool suit with horn buttons ; double-breasted jacket and creased trousers with hems.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lilliard, Derek","id":"A19920"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"x33187"},{"text":"horn","id":"AAT11826"}],"techniques":[{"text":"tailoring","id":"x39134"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Poly-wool and horn","categories":[{"text":"African Diaspora","id":"THES48873"},{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"},{"text":"Streetstyle exhibition 1994","id":"THES282706"},{"text":"Caribbean","id":"THES286921"}],"styles":[{"text":"Caribbean","id":"AAT107947"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2018LB5020","2018LB5021","2006AT5473"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES325736"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES325736"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jacket","id":""}],[{"text":"Trousers","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1994","earliest":"1994-01-01","latest":"1994-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1950s","earliest":"1950-01-01","latest":"1959-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Weight","value":"2.16","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Jacket and trousers","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1994/2222, Streetstyle exhibition 1994-1995, in the exhibition it was part of an outfit called 'Caribbean Style UK Mid-1950s' (includes the hat T.967-1994).","historicalContext":"'Caribbean style UK mid-1950s.
