He was the son of the painter Christian Gottlieb Steinlen (1779-1847) and became a pupil of J.A.Glardon in Geneva and of Gleyre in Paris.\r\n\r\nThis painting is a typical example of Steinlen's early output. This painting showing a young woman drawing water at a well in a board style and earthen palette that reveal the influence of his master Charles Gleyre. This painting was probably made in Vevey where he appeared to have stayed all his life. Rustic subject matter and everyday life scenes were quite popular during the second half of the 19th century.","physicalDescription":"A woman wearing a long coton dress and a white headgear is drawing water at a fountain in a courtyard.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Steinlen, Marius","id":"A19221"},"association":{"text":"painter (artist)","id":"AAT25136"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oil paint","id":"AAT15050"},{"text":"canvas","id":"AAT14078"}],"techniques":[{"text":"oil painting","id":"AAT178684"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Oil on canvas","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[{"text":"Swiss School","id":"x31273"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2007BL4054"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"B","id":"THES304645"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"oil paintings","id":"AAT33799"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1855","earliest":"1855-01-01","latest":"1855-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Rev., Chauncey Hare Townshend","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"24.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"19","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Measurement taken at time of assessment prior to BH decant - Frame Dimensions (mm): H-586 W-328 D-58;\nPainting Dimensions (mm): not measured"}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from C.M. Chauncey Hare Townshend, 1868\n\nHistorical significance: This painting is typical of the naturalist movement developed in Germanic Europe during the 19th century. Swiss painters in particular received both the influence of the Realist movement emerged in France in the 1840s and the Biedermeier imagery characterised by sentimental domestic scenes. \r\nSchlesinger is mostly known for his paintings on enamel and this painting is therefore a rare example of his oil compositions.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Oil painting, 'Drawing Water', Marius Steinlen, Swiss school, 1855","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Kauffmann, C.M. <u>Catalogue of Foreign Paintings, II. 1800-1900 </u>, London: Victoria and Albert Museum, 1973, p. 99, cat. no. 216."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"woman","id":"x35642"},{"text":"fountain","id":"AAT6179"},{"text":"courtyard","id":"AAT4095"}],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"genre scene","id":"x45353"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["1628-1869"],"accessionNumberNum":"1628","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1869,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2007-04-10","availableToBook":true}}
