Under the influence of his fellow artists Jan Toorop and Jessurun de Mesquita, Teixeira became particularly interested in drawing, media that he thought had been neglected by the Impressionists. Moving to Paris in 1938, and especially a trip to Spain of 1953, made of Teixeira de Mattos an independent artist. At every trip to Spain that he took, the artist returned to Paris with a portfolio full of new inspiring drawings. This drawing records one of the artist's favorite holiday destinations.","physicalDescription":"Coast scene","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Teixeira de Mattos, Joseph","id":"A19186"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"charcoal","id":"AAT12862"},{"text":"white chalk","id":"x39202"},{"text":"red chalk","id":"AAT80064"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Charcoal and white chalk, with traces of red chalk, on grey paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2008BU4459"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MB2A","shelf":"DR56","box":"CONS"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Portbou","id":"x40618"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1962","earliest":"1962-01-01","latest":"1962-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Ellen Teixeira","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"32.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"50.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"At bottom centre-right artist's monogram and date '1962' and 'Port-Bou'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drawing by Joseph Teixeira de Mattos, Coast scene at Port-Bou","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Portbou","id":"x40618"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.338-2007"],"accessionNumberNum":"338","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2007,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-02","recordCreationDate":"2007-03-29","availableToBook":false}}
