The turned front legs are connected to the shaped square section rear legs by two curved stretchers on each side.  Two more stretchers connect the front legs. The seat rails are tennoned to the legs. A secondary seat frame is attached to the top of the seat rails and encloses a heart-shaped panel of caning.  The rear legs rise to become the sides of the back and are tennoned into a broad top rail pierced with two hand holes. He worked as a portrait painter and graphic artist but proved to be a remarkable designer of furniture with a keen grasp of woodworking technique and detailing.
