From the 1850s, Skidmore had a particular interest in a new invention which was that of gas lighting.  His firm installed it in three buildings in Coventry: the medieval St Mary's Hall, Coventry, in 1850, a year later, in St Michael's Church, and in 1856, in the Holy Trinity Church. A gas lamp standard in the latter church has similar decoration to these designs.
