She attended a post-graduate degree course in fashion at St Martin's School of Art and founded the 'Personal Items' design company with her sister, Judy Littman.  In 1983, together with Claire Angel, they founded English Eccentrics, named after Edith Sitwell's book, and produced hand printed and hand embroidered silk garments and scarves. \r\n\r\nDavid's work is influenced by travel, ecology and green issues, the women's peace movement, architecture, costume and nature.  She says 'I like to mix the references with other experiences to make it more personal .... obvious cultural piracy is boring - what makes an exciting design is the elements of surprise.'","physicalDescription":"Screen-printed silk scarf featuring neo-classical architectural motifs, floor tiles and engravings of sculptures mixed with text relating to green issues, world politics and women's peace movement.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Helen David","id":"AUTH318404"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"English Eccentrics","id":"A30306"},"association":{"text":"designed for","id":"x41471"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"screen printing","id":"AAT53281"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screen-printed silk","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2018LD5152"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES307730"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Silk Scarf","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1980s","earliest":"1975-01-01","latest":"1993-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Gary Page","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"122","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"107","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Screen-printed silk scarf designed by Helen David for English Eccentrics, neo-classical architectural motifs with text, England, ca. 1980s.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Helen David nee Littman was part of the creative team behind English Eccentrics\n\nReason For Production: Retail","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"architectural elements","id":"AAT885"},{"text":"sculpture","id":"AAT47090"}],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"peace","id":"AAT260027"},{"text":"politics","id":"AAT55537"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.4-2007"],"accessionNumberNum":"4","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2007,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2007-03-20","availableToBook":true}}
