After firing, the splashes would have acquired a rust-brown colour, making a pleasant contrast with the black ground. The peculiar pattern produced on the surface is generally known as 'tortoise-shell'. \r\n\r\nThis type of ware was particularly favoured to drink tea, and was imitated by potters in Japan.","physicalDescription":"Stoneware bowl with rust-brown splashes on black glaze ('tortoise shell' glaze)","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware, glazed","categories":[{"text":"Stoneware","id":"THES48890"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Jin","id":"AAT106415"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2008BR9622"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"31","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"BOWL","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Henan","id":"x29894"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1127-1279","earliest":"1127-01-01","latest":"1279-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with Art Fund support, the Vallentin Bequest, Sir Percival David and the Universities China Committee","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bowl, stoneware with 'tortoise-shell' glaze, Henan, China, Jin dynasty (1127-1279)","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Bowl with 'tortoise-shell' glaze\r\nSouthern China, Southern Song dynasty, 1127-1279\r\nMuseum no.
