The Green Man is found in very many cultures around the world and is often an embodiment of local gods associated with plant life. Primarily it is interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of growth being reborn anew each spring. Much pagan symbolism was absorbed into Christian tradition, and the Green Man is frequently found as a decorative motif in church architecture in Britain. In the later 19th century, during the Gothic Revival and the Arts and Crafts movement, the motif enjoyed a revival in both religious and secular buildings. \n\nThe carver, James Erskine Knox (<i>c</i>.1842-1917) was born in Lambeth, London, the son of James Knox (born <i>c</i>.1804, London), a turner. He was apprenticed to Thomas Earp as a wood carver and then worked for him for some years. Later in his career, Knox became an assistant to John Francis Bentley, working on the building of Westminster Cathedral.","physicalDescription":"Carved oak bracket in the form of the head of a Green Man","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Knox, James Erskine","id":"A19095"},"association":{"text":"wood-carver","id":"AAT25382"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oak","id":"AAT12264"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Oak, carved","categories":[{"text":"Folk Art","id":"THES49003"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2007BP9382","2007BP9383"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES343486"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Carving","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1910","earliest":"1910-01-01","latest":"1910-12-31"},"association":{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"232","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"333","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"158","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured from the object","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'J.E.
