Léger continues his evident fascination with the circus in the design for this fabric: both the vigorous vitality and the spontanaeity of the spectacle come through strongly. Léger's treatment of this subject frequently incorporates an element of the sinister, which can be detected here through the contorted, almost grotesque faces of the performers and the French phrase 'Cette Parade Sauvage', meaning 'this wild/barbaric parade' which appears throughout.    \r\n\r\nIt was this combination of activity and chaos that appealed to Léger, who observed in 1950:\r\n\r\n'A circus is a circulation of great masses of people, animals and objects.... Go to the circus. You leave behind your rectangles, your geometric windows, and you go to the country of circles in action.'","physicalDescription":"Furnishing fabric of screen-printed cotton.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Fernand Léger","id":"A19093"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Fuller Fabrics","id":"A19202"},"association":{"text":"designed for","id":"x41471"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"screen printing","id":"AAT53281"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screen-printed cotton","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"}],"styles":[{"text":"Cubism","id":"AAT21495"},{"text":"Orphism","id":"AAT134101"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2019MK5539","2012FM8975","2018KY8401"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES307403"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Furnishing fabric","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"New York","id":"x29030"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1956","earliest":"1956-01-01","latest":"1956-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Fuller Fabrics","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"918","unit":"mm","qualifier":"max length","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1025","unit":"mm","qualifier":"max width","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Furnishing fabric 'Parade Sauvage' of screen-printed cotton, designed by Fernand Léger for Fuller Fabrics, New York, 1956","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Trapeze","id":"AAT211257"},{"text":"Circus performer","id":"x35480"},{"text":"circuses (performances)","id":"AAT69235"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.439-1956"],"accessionNumberNum":"439","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1956,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-01-10","recordCreationDate":"2007-03-08","availableToBook":true}}
