There are also a number of garments designed by John Cavanagh in the Fashion collection, ranging from a ball gown for his eponymous fashion house (T.15-2013), to a day dress designed for Liberty (T.33-1983).","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"John Cavanagh; Fashion Illustration, circa 1950","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"This illustration is one of 27 fashion illustrations attributed to the designer John Cavanagh. They appear for the most part to be c. 1949- 1953, and therefore may be from when he was working at Pierre Balmain; certainly, stylistically, they are very much in the style of Balmain. They also bear comparison with Cavanagh’s autograph drawings, with the proviso that many fashion designers of the time cultivated a similar sketching style. \n\nIn January 1952 John Cavanagh opened his own fashion house, named Cavanagh, at 26 Curzon Place, Mayfair.  Cavanagh's first collection was positively received by fashion journalists, other designers and by clients.
