He began his career as a photographer in the 1990s and has showed his work in several solo and group exhibitions in Belgium and abroad. He currently works as Associate Professor of Photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp. The book that accompanies the series Simple Present was published by Lannoo in 2013.\r\n\r\nDanckaert’s series Simple Present is an exploration of the modern, urban environment. The work comprises fifty streetscapes taken in cities around the world including Bejing, New York, Havana, Rotterdam, Lisbon and Shanghai. Danckaert’s interest in the everyday features heavily in the work. Rather than photographing renowned monuments and landmarks associated with the locations depicted, he instead observes the similarities within and between these urban landscapes. His attention is drawn to the unremarkable and undistinguished areas that make up a city and reveal a different identity. The photographs in the series retain a level of anonymity in the sense that the whereabouts of these sites lies solely in the image captions. As such, the viewer is invited to consider alternative representations of well-known locations. \r\n","physicalDescription":"A colour photograph of a wall in what looks like a playground.
